Javier Gomez Navarro

President Asociación Turismo de Madrid, Spain

He was born in Madrid in 1945. He studied industrial engineering, chemical specialty in the School of Industrial Engineers. He is specialized in the field of tourism and promotes the creation of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) between 1979 and 1980. In 1983 he was elected Chairman and CEO of Viajes Marsans, the oldest travel agency in Spain and one of the most important in those years. In January 1987 he was appointed Secretary of State of Sports, and he was responsible on behalf of the Government of Spain, the organization of the Olympic Games in 1992. He was Vice President of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games and supervised along with Barcelona Mayor all investments made in Barcelona for games. He realized a profound reform of Spanish, a new Law of sport boosted and private sponsorship of top sport creating the ADO program (Olympic Sports Association, 92), who presided throughout his term.

In July 1993 he was appointed by Felipe González, Minister of Trade and Tourism, a position he held until June 1996, developing a strong export moment and the law on internal trade. Also he put on new initiatives to improve mature tourist destinations of sun and beach and created all tourism organisms: Interministerial Commission of Tourism, Sector Conference and Tourism Board. After leaving the Ministry he is engaged in international tourism consultancy advising to many Latin American countries: Mexico, Cuba, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay and the Inter-American Development Bank.

In 2005 he was elected President of the Superior Council of Commerce Chambers of Spain and Chairman of the company Aldeasa, which promoted a strong process of internalization, posts held until 2011 and reconciles with the presidency of MBD.

He is a trustee of the Ortega y Gasset Foundation, and the Spanish Geographic Foundation, President of the Foundation Esys, of the Tourist Association of Madrid and President of the Spanish Geographical Society.

Throughout his life he has been a counselor of many companies including: Mundicolor, Vacation Club, Pullmantur, Trasmediterranea, Inisel, Aviaco, Sogecable, Altadis, Autogrill, Iberia, Spain and Capio Securitas Spain.

He is currently advisor of important Spanish companies: Isolux, S.A., MBD and Tecnicas Reunidas.
